The THAW

The Thaw by Henry David Thoreau

I saw the civil sun drying earth’s tears –

Her tears of joy that only faster flowed,

Fain would I stretch my by the highway side,

To thaw and trickle with the melting snow,

I too may through the pores of nature flow.

But I alas nor tinkle can nor fume,

One jot to forward the great work of Time,

‘Tis mine to hearken while these ply the loom,

So shall my silence with their music chime.

Poetry can be colored by your perspective and your lived experiences.

This poem speaks to me of connection to nature and the euphoria felt when the thaw is realized. Winter yields and spring emerges. The first kiss of the warm sun felt on your exposed skin.

The desire to be connected to the rebirth of Nature, the continual movement forward. One moment in time when tallied as a sum that has resulted in millions of years and will continue millions more.

And our insignificance in the process.

I am also reminiscent of the poem by Jeff Lynne, frontman to the band Electric Light Orchestra.

Mr. Blue Sky

Sun is shinin' in the sky

There ain't a cloud in sight

It's stopped rainin' everybody's in the play

And don't you know

It's a beautiful new day, hey hey

Mine to simply witness and enjoy and stand in awe.

“So shall my silence with their music chime”

If you need me, I will be outside soaking up the beautiful new day😊 (with sunscreen of course)
